Why is it in News?
India and Chile are strengthening cooperation in lithium, copper and other critical minerals as India seeks more diversified and resilient mineral supply chains.
In June 2026, the Indian Embassy in Santiago participated in a high-level meeting between Coal India Limited and Chile’s Ministry of Mining to discuss lithium, critical minerals and investment opportunities. In July, India’s Ambassador to Chile also discussed facilitating Indian investment in Chile’s mining sector and cooperation in sustainable mining and mineral technology.
The issue is particularly important because Chile is one of the world’s major suppliers of copper and lithium. Recent disruption at Chile’s Escondida mine—the world’s largest copper mine—has also highlighted the strategic importance of the country’s mineral production.
Geographic Overview: Why Is Chile Rich in Critical Minerals?
Chile is located along the western margin of South America, between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes Mountains. Its unusual north–south extent and diverse geological structure have created exceptionally rich mineral resources.
1. Copper
Chile is the world’s leading producer of mined copper. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, Chile accounted for about 24% of global mined copper production in 2024. Copper is essential for electricity transmission, renewable-energy systems, electronics, electric vehicles and modern infrastructure.
The country’s major copper deposits are concentrated mainly in northern and central Chile, including the mineral-rich Atacama Desert. The Escondida mine, located in the Atacama Desert, is the world’s largest copper mine and is therefore an important part of the global copper supply chain.
2. Lithium
Chile is also a major global lithium producer. USGS data place it as the second-largest producer of lithium, accounting for an estimated 22% of global production in 2024. Chile’s lithium resources are concentrated in salt flats (salars) of the Atacama region. The extremely dry climate of the Atacama Desert is particularly important for the development of these resources. Lithium is a key raw material for electric-vehicle batteries and energy-storage systems.
Why Is Chile Important for India?
India’s rapid growth in electric mobility, renewable energy, electronics and battery storage is increasing demand for critical minerals. Chile can help India diversify its sources of mineral supply. A 2026 MP-IDSA analysis noted that Chile supplied a significant share of India’s lithium compounds in FY2025, including 32% of lithium carbonate and 41% of lithium oxides and hydroxides.
India is therefore interested not only in importing minerals but also in cooperation covering:
- Mineral exploration
- Mining and investment
- Mineral processing
- Battery supply chains
- Sustainable mining technology
- Long-term mineral supply agreements
India and Chile have already identified critical minerals as an area for deeper cooperation.
Geographic Significance
Chile’s importance goes beyond its mineral reserves. Its position on the Pacific coast of South America gives India access to a major resource region outside Asia. For India, cooperation with Chile can contribute to supply-chain diversification, while Chile gains access to India’s large and growing market. Thus, the India–Chile relationship connects resource geography, international trade, energy transition and economic security.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Which critical minerals are most important in India–Chile cooperation?
Lithium and copper are the most prominent, although cooperation extends to other strategic minerals.
2. Why is Chile rich in copper and lithium?
Chile’s mineral wealth is linked to its Andean geological setting, while lithium is especially associated with salt-flat environments in the extremely dry Atacama region.
3. Why does India need Chilean minerals?
India needs reliable supplies of minerals for EV batteries, renewable energy, electronics, power infrastructure and advanced manufacturing. Chile provides an important opportunity to diversify these supply chains.
